Updated: Aug 10, 2023

A Beginners Guide

By Alika Nzimbi

What is the heart “bead” of Africa, you might ask. Well, it’s just that. For centuries beads have been a staple in different African countries. Used for various reasons, the bead has become known for more than just a bead, becoming Africa’s heart “bead”. It is produced in Africa by local, skillful Artisans and is now sold around the globe. You must be asking, “What are they? And what are they used for?” Well, you’re about to find out.

From The Beginning

There are many theories about where African Beads came from. Some say Phoenician mariners brought the first beads and others say that the beads were brought by Portuguese and Dutch traders. Regardless of their origin, we do know that they have been in Africa for centuries.

They had varied use, ranging from clothing to commerce in the marketplace, and commerce in the slave trade in most areas around Western Africa. In the fashion industry, the beads were used in Western Africa as hair decorations, while in East Africa, the Maasai wore them as necklaces.

Made? How?

The different techniques for making beads vary from country to country. However, the materials are common across the continent. Historically, beads were made from bones, shells (e.g. ostrich eggs), seeds, stones, and many more materials. In modern times, the beads are made using transparent glass.

Corners of Africa

Despite the beads being made with the same materials, the meaning of the beads and their cultural significance and use varies from country to country.

North Africa

In Egypt's history, you see men and women decorating their necks with different forms of wide collar necklaces. The beads would be put in rows and then shaped like anything ranging from flowers to animals. The adorner of the necklace would stretch it to reach their collarbone and in following hung pendants on them.

West Africa

The people of Ghana use beads in rituals and voodoo worship, BUT, they are also used as a way to show liking between the men and women. For example, if a boy likes a girl, he would make beads out of bamboo, and gift them to her. She would then in turn wear the beads to show him off.

South Africa

The Ndebele people of South Africa use the beads to show different social functions and rankings. The women wear different kinds of beads depending on their age. The beads worn reflect their status as children, adolescents, and married women.

East Africa

East Africa has several cultures that wear beads, like the Dinka Men in South Sudan who wear beaded corsets. Although, the most talked about community that wears beads, is the Maasai culture.
